The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America recently approved $1,577,522.75 to be allocated to 105 pastoral projects in other Episcopal Conferences, Dioceses, Parishes, Religious Congregations, Educational Institutions and Lay Movements in 21 countries. So far in 2008, the subcommittee has approved a total of 246 projects or $3,827,000; these funds assist the Church throughout Latin America and the Caribbean to meet their local pastoral needs by funding seminarian and religious formation, religious education, catechesis and youth ministries, evangelization, lay formation and ministry, diaconate training, and research.

Special emphasis this year is being given to supporting local initiatives that respond to the goals established at the V General Conference of Latin American Bishops held in Aparecida, Brazil, 13-31 of May, 2007, especially the launching of the Continental Mission in 2008.

Annually the Subcommittee awards between 500 and 600 grants. In 2007, 562 grants were awarded for a total of $7,722.313.51. This year’s final award totals will depend in a large part on the out come of the 2008 Collection for the Church in Latin America.
