Auxiliary Bishop Jenky of Fort Wayne-South Bend Named to Peoria
WASHINGTON (February 11, 2002) -- Pope John Paul II has named Fort Wayne-South Bend Auxiliary Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C., as Bishop of Peoria. Bishop Jenky succeeds Most Reverend John J. Myers who was named Archbishop of Newark last July.
Archbishop Gabriel Montalvo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United States, announced the appointment.
Daniel Jenky was born in Evergreen Park, Illinois, March 3, 1947. He attended Quigley South High School Seminary and St. Laurence High School. In September, 1965, he became a postulant in the Congregation of the Holy Cross, Province of Indiana. He earned a B.A. in History at the University of Notre Dame in 1970 followed by a Masters in Theology in 1973.
Bishop Jenky made final profession of vows in 1973. He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1974.
He taught at Bourgade Catholic High School in Phoenix from 1974 to 1975 when he returned to the University of Notre Dame.
Bishop Jenky was associate director and later director of Campus Ministry, from 1976 to 1984, with responsibility for the pastoral care of students, faculty and staff at Notre Dame. He was appointed Rector of Sacred Heart Basilica, the university's main church, in 1977 and became an instructor in theology in 1985.
From 1985 to 1990 he was religious superior of members of the Congregation of the Holy Cross at the University of Notre Dame.
Bishop Jenky was appointed Titular Bishop of Amanzia and Auxiliary Bishop of Fort Wayne-South Bend on October 21, 1997.
