Solidarity Rides

Hosting A Solidarity Ride in Your Diocese
What: A local solidarity ride is an exciting way to engage Catholics, youth, funded groups and community members in the Brake the Cycle tour.
Why: The goal of Brake the Cycle is to increase awareness about poverty in the United States and educate people about the Church's response to the root causes of poverty through the efforts of the Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
Who: Dioceses can connect with Brake the Cycle by organizing a local ride or event through parishes, schools, youth groups, family ministry and other local community-based organizations.
When: Brake the Cycle begins June 1, 2003 in San Francisco. The bike tour will visit 32 dioceses and end in Washington, D.C. on August 1st. Solidarity rides can be planned to coincide with a visit by the core team of riders for on-route dioceses or at a time that is convenient for an educational and/or media event for off-route dioceses.
What can you expect from CCHD national staff?
- Up to 50 free Brake the Cycle water bottles
- Three free event t-shirts with additional t-shirts available at a cost of $10 each
- Advice and support for logistical and media arrangements
- Advertisement of your event with a follow up story on www.brakethecycle.org
- Up to 100 event fliers to promote brake the cycle
- Up to 200 event pledge cards
How: The following are some ideas for planning your solidarity ride:
- Decide on the nature of your solidarity ride. For example, it could
be an afternoon event that begins with talks by the diocesan and by
a representative of a local CCHD-funded group bishop and, followed by
a 5; 10, or 20, mile family fun ride, followed by a picnic.
- Let CCHD national staff know about your event.
- Discuss the idea with your local CCHD committee to get them involved or establish an ad hoc group to coordinate the ride.
- Meet with key diocesan staff such as the communications director to strategize how you can promote CCHD and raise awareness about poverty.
- Meet with the bishop to ask for his support.
- Identify your target audience locally (youth, select parishes, etc.).
- Select a date. check diocesan and local community event calendars to ensure no conflicts exist.
- Develop a recruitment and promotion strategy.
- Develop a media outreach strategy.
- Make it happen! Your event will be an exciting way to engage Catholics in the mission of CCHD.
