Riders

A team of more than twenty riders will leave San Francisco on June 1, 2003, and will ride across the country, ending on August 1 in Washington, DC. The group of riders, ranging in age from 21-72, will travel through 12 states and 34 Catholic Dioceses in an effort to call attention to the increase in US poverty in America. As the cyclists progress across the country, they will spend time in the evenings with grass roots groups and Catholic parishioners interested in learning more about the issues, encouraging a dialogue about effective ways to permanently eliminate the effects of poverty and urging people to take action. A 5-day Solidarity bike tour is planned to leave from St. Bridget's parish in Manchester, Connecticut on July 27 and join up with the core group in Baltimore on July 31 for the final leg of the trip.

Brake the Cycle will provide all riders the opportunity to act on their faith, build community, increase awareness of poverty, learn first hand about issues of social justice, and grow personally.

Two national staff will lead the core riders.
Riders must be 18 or older.
Local Solidarity Rides sponsored by the dioceses are being organized for riders who can not commit to riding the full two months.
Contact your local diocesan director for more information.
